Problem

University course registration involves multiple user groups and interconnected administrative processes. Students need to browse available courses and submit registration requests, while professors and educational managers require access to academic schedules, course information, and enrollment records.

Managing these processes through disconnected tools can make course availability, registration status, and administrative approvals difficult to coordinate.

The objective was to build a centralized web application supporting university course selection, academic administration, and differentiated access for students, professors, educational managers, and IT administrators.

Approach

Designed a full-stack architecture with a React frontend, an Express REST API, and MongoDB persistence through Mongoose.

Structured the backend into separate routes, controllers, models, and middleware to organize application responsibilities. Created database schemas for students, professors, educational managers, faculties, approved courses, semester courses, semesters, and registration requests.

Implemented JWT-based login and role-aware authorization, with bcrypt for password hashing. Built administrative APIs for managing users, faculties, courses, and academic semesters, alongside endpoints for student pre-registration and registration workflows.

Developed role-specific React interfaces with Material UI, React Router, and Redux Toolkit. Implemented forms, navigation, data tables, semester views, course selection pages, and registration management screens.

Added Swagger documentation for REST endpoints and configured Docker services for Node.js, MongoDB, and Redis.

Outcome

Built a multi-role university course registration application with dedicated interfaces and backend functionality for students, professors, educational managers, and IT administrators.

Implemented database models and REST endpoints for user management, course administration, semester management, course requests, and enrollment workflows.

Integrated JWT authentication, role-aware navigation, Swagger API documentation, and Docker-based service configuration.

The repository contains both frontend and backend source code, providing a substantial example of full-stack application development. Production deployment, automated integration-test results, and measured performance improvements are not documented.

Highlights

  • Implemented REST APIs with modular routes, controllers, and Mongoose models
  • Integrated JWT authentication and bcrypt password hashing
  • Developed course pre-registration and registration workflows
  • Built administrative dashboards for managing users, courses, and semesters
  • Documented backend APIs with Swagger/OpenAPI
  • Configured Docker services for Node.js, MongoDB, and Redis

Notes

Developed a full-stack university course selection and registration platform using React, Node.js, Express, and MongoDB. The application provides dedicated interfaces for students, professors, educational managers, and IT administrators, supporting different stages of academic course management.

Designed a RESTful backend using Express and Mongoose, with separate routes, controllers, and database models for managing users, professors, students, faculties, courses, semesters, and registration requests.

Implemented JWT-based authentication, password hashing with bcrypt, and role-aware access controls to separate administrative, academic, and student functionality. Integrated Swagger/OpenAPI documentation to describe backend endpoints and support API exploration.

Developed a React frontend using Material UI, React Router, and Redux Toolkit. Built role-specific dashboards for viewing academic information, managing semesters, maintaining user records, submitting course requests, and handling course pre-registration and registration workflows.

Added Docker configuration for the Node.js application, MongoDB, and Redis to support container-based development and service setup. The project demonstrates full-stack application architecture, API development, database modeling, authentication, and complex multi-role workflows.
